🏰 Grand Squares, Secret Alleys & Too Much Chocolate: A Real & Honest Guide to Brussels ✨🍫

Getting from Rotterdam to Brussels couldn’t have been easier! We hopped on the train, and in just an hour and a half, we were pulling into Belgium. The train made a quick stop in Antwerp, giving us a brief peek at its stunning, palace-like train station—definitely a feast for the eyes even from the platform! 🏛️✨

We arrived right at Brussels-Central, which lives up to its name—it drops you straight into the heart of the city. But here’s our real, unfiltered takeaway: do not haul your heavy suitcases over historic cobblestones! 🧳🧱 We decided to walk to our hotel, Hotel Van Belle, a sleek, modern stay 🏨✨, and let’s just say our wheels (and wrists) paid the price. In hindsight? We 100% should have grabbed a quick taxi from the station. Consider this your official fair warning! 😂🚕

After dropping off our luggage, we headed out to explore the chocolate capital of the world! 🍫✨

We started our walk through the Pentagone, the heart of Brussels named for the iconic pentagonal shape formed by its ring road 🗺️. We began on the wide, beautiful Boulevard Anspach, a bustling pedestrian boulevard full of energy, which led us straight toward the Church of Our Lady of the Rich Clares ⛪. Located in the trendy Dansaert district—famous for its high-end fashion boutiques and vibrant indie energy—the church almost looks like a fairytale castle with its striking Flemish Baroque facade and ornate stone detail 🏰.

We continued winding through charming side streets into Anneessens, a lively multicultural neighborhood known for its diverse local markets, cozy cafés, and authentic neighborhood vibe ☕ narrow streets. Crossing through Chaussée de Mons—a historic trade road bustling with local shops—we arrived at Place Fontainas, a colorful open square that serves as a favorite gathering spot for locals 🌳.

From there, we walked down toward Stalingrad and passed the beautiful Church of Our Lady of Good Help 🏛️. Continuing down Rue du Jardin des Olives—a peaceful, cobblestone alleyway nestled away from the main crowds—we made our way back into the center toward Brussels’ most famous resident: the Manneken Pis 👦💦! This tiny 17th-century bronze statue of a peeing boy is an absolute city icon and legendary symbol of Belgian humor. We were extra lucky during our visit because a live band was playing right in front of him, filling the whole street with music! 🎺🎷

After stopping for our promised Belgian waffle—getting that piping-hot, crispy perfection wrapped in wax paper 🧇—we continued our walk, passing by the Town Hall 🏛️. It is an extraordinarily impressive Gothic masterpiece with a soaring tower that draws your eyes straight up to the sky.

Passing the Town Hall brought us right into the heart of the city: the magnificent Grand-Place 👑✨. Stepping into this UNESCO World Heritage square feels like literally stepping back in time ⏳. The historic guildhalls surrounding you feature gold-leaf embellishments, intricate stone carvings, and opulent facades that leave you completely speechless 🤩. We briefly considered grabbing a coffee at one of the outdoor terraces right on the square, but my honest recommendation is to skip the Grand-Place cafés entirely—they are total tourist traps with slow service that isn't built to serve you well! Instead, save your coffee break for just a few minutes away when you reach the stunning Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert ☕ sheltered under its gorgeous glass roof.

On our way toward the galleries, we passed by St. Nicholas Church (Sint-Niklaaskerk) ⛪. Tucked right nearby, we stumbled upon a shop baking unique, handcrafted brioche 🥐✨. Even though there was a long line wrapping down the street, it is an absolute must-try—the fresh, warm brioche is worth every single minute of waiting!

We continued past rows of enticing chocolate shops and cozy local cafés 🍫☕ until we arrived at the magnificent Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert 🏛️. Stepping under its soaring glass roof instantly reminded me of the famous Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan 🇮🇹✨. It has that exact same regal, grand architecture! Here, sheltered inside this beautiful historic arcade, you can finally sit down to enjoy a truly exceptional cup of coffee alongside world-class chocolatiers ☕ Belgian truffles.

As we eventually made our way out, we passed by the Bourse (the historic Old Stock Exchange building) 🏛️, which has been beautifully restored into Belgian Beer World, an interactive museum celebrating the country's rich brewing heritage 🍺.
